Yara has received an offer for Nkr133.6m ($17m) grant from Enova, a Norwegian Government enterprise, towards assistance for the construction of Yara Birkelan, the world’s first electric and autonomous container ship.

Designed by Marin Teknikk, the ship will have a length of 6m and will weigh approximately 2.4t. The construction contract was awarded to Kongsberg.

Expected to be launched by the first quarter of 2019, the vessel will be used by Yara for transporting fertiliser from its production plant in Porsgrunn to container ports located in Brevik and Larvikin, Norway.

The vessel will be designed by Koncept Stockholm’s team, consisting of ten members led by Niclas Makowsky and Ann Marie Ekroth. It will be constructed by Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry in China.

The vessel will have a length of 218m, cargo capacity of 63,000t, and accommodation capacity of up to 2,800 passengers.
