Southern Blasting Services - Paint / Coatings Removal and Application

Southern Blasting Services specialise in the environmentally friendly coatings-removal methods of Ultra-High Pressure (UHP) water blasting and abrasive blasting. We also provide all types of paint / coatings application methods, including thermal spraying of coatings for zinc and aluminium.

We have made a substantial investment in buying our own UHP machines, which are kept fully maintained by skilled workers who understand the equipment and the correct and safe methods of operating such equipment. This results in far greater cost-effectiveness than the traditional methods of hiring in machines with operators that may not be as familiar with the best and safest operating procedures.

PAINT / COATINGS WATER BLASTING

The staff at SBS are all very experienced and have been in the blasting and corrosion-protection industry for many years, and are motivated to work to the highest standards in the safest way possible. This produces a highly efficient, cost-effective, safe working environment.

All staff are trained and have the appropriate certification for the safe use of all equipment and the health and safety aspects for working on-site, and have been trained and certified for the safe operation of plants, including access equipment.

ULTRA-HIGH PRESSURE WATER BLASTING

UHP water jetting / blasting is the modern, environmentally friendly way of preparing a surface for coatings application. Even the most modern or expensive coatings will fail if the surface is not properly prepared. UHP water-blasting provides the cost-effective solution for surface preparation in every industry sector.

NLB UHP BLASTING UNITS

Operating at 40,000psi (2,800bar), our state-of-the-art NLB UHP blasting units enable us to remove any coating, taking the substrate back to its original profile; and unlike other 'traditional' surface-preparation methods, they ensure the surface is completely contaminant-free.

Another major advantage that UHP blasting holds over abrasive blasting is the effect on the environment. Abrasive blasting creates several environmental and health and safety issues: it creates a cloud of dust, covering everything in the vicinity with a fine abrasive layer of dust; you end up with a pile of grit on floor where you are working, with possibilities of contaminating the local area and waterways; and personnel are liable to breathe in abrasive dust (whilst the operator and their team have breathing apparatus, not everyone on or near the site will).

UHP blasting has none of these issues attached to it. The diesel engines powering the latest pumps are Euro 3 compliant for emissions, and the pumps operate between 12L/min and 24L/min, which is comparable to the water usage from a standard household hosepipe. You have none of the contamination from dust, and none of the clean-up and disposal costs for the used abrasive.

WATER JETTING MACHINES AND SPRAY PUMPS

Corrosion provides a serious headache for every ship owner, as they have to weigh up the cost of putting the ship into dry dock for corrosion maintenance and repainting, against leaving it trading at sea and incurring extra cost by more extensive repair works later on.

Southern Blasting Services can offer a skilled team of water-blasting operatives and coatings applicators, as well as all the required equipment, including water jetting machines and spray pumps. To systematically blast and repaint the corroded areas whilst the vessel is at sea, being incredibly flexible and working around the vessel's own operations, we can provide minimal intrusion into the day-to-day running of the ship, and allow you to avoid the costs of lost revenue and fees whilst in dock.

SHIP AND TANK COATINGS

We specialise in on-site coatings application, include ship painting, petro-chemical tank painting and coatings application in environmentally sensitive areas.

At each stage of the application process wet and dry film thickness checks are carried out to ensure that sufficient coating has been applied. Continual environmental checks at every stage to ensure conditions are acceptable for coatings application.

We can also offer a heated plural feed spray system, where the need for a highly specialised coating is required.
