Grenco Obtains Large Order From W. van der Zwan & Zn. B.V

25 April 2006

Fishing vessel operator W. van der Zwan & Zn. B.V. in the Netherlands placed a remarkable order with Grenco Marine for the replacement of refrigeration plants aboard of two of their pelagic freezing trawlers. It concerns the delivery of two environmentally friendly cooling and freezing plants for the SCH302 (Willem van der Zwan) and the SCH6 (Alida). Grenco Marine will engineer, install and deliver the new equipment for both vessels.

The present installations aboard of the vessels (SCH302 and SCH6) are operated with Freon (R22). As of January 2010 these installations cannot be recharged again with newly produced R22, and after 2015 it will not be allowed to be used anymore according to Dutch law. The new installations will operate with ammonia (NH3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) which are so-called natural refrigerants. With the use of natural refrigerants a considerable effort is made to reduce the greenhouse effect and the depletion of the ozone layer.

Furthermore, considerable energy savings will be achieved by installing the new systems. The total energy savings amount to 30% compared to the energy consumption of the present systems aboard of the vessels. Fishing vessel operator W. van der Zwan & Zn. B.V. and Grenco Marine started their cooperation two years ago when a small ammonia / carbon dioxide system was installed aboard of the SCH333 (Oceaan VII) in order to gain experience with the new system.

In November 2005 Grenco Marine ended third out of 20 contestants, when they participated in the Holland Marine Equipment contest for the 2005 Innovation Award.

Grenco Marine was also the first to install CO2 screw compressor packages aboard pelagic freezing trawlers and created a solid base for future projects with the new ammonia / carbon dioxide freezing system.
