ALSTOM Wins Propulsion System Order for Two New MSC Croisières Cruise Ships

28 September 2004

The power conversion business of ALSTOM has been awarded a multi-million euro contract to supply electric propulsion systems for the next two MSC Croisières cruise ships to be delivered respectively in 2006 and 2007.

These new generation ships, to be built at Chantiers de l’Atlantique in St Nazaire, will be bigger than the MSC Lirica and MSC Opera which have been recently launched, also fitted with ALSTOM electric propulsion systems.

The new vessels, 294m long and 32.20m wide, will carry up to 3,000 passengers and 1,000 crew members. They will each be equipped with two synchronous motors, 17.5MW each supplied through synchroconverters. ALSTOM's scope of supply will also include the propulsion transformers, advanced digital propulsion control and a remote control system.

Pierre Simon, a Director of ALSTOM Power Conversion France said: "This new order confirms our market-leading position in electric propulsion and control systems for cruise ships and shows the trust our customers place in ALSTOM. Along with the recent Costa Mystery and the Carnival Liberty orders, we are delighted to add those two new ships to our references. Of course, our teams will bring together all their skills at any level - engineering, project management, commissioning and training – to meet MSC Croisières's expectations."
