RENK's RSV / RSH Series Gear Units and Twin Marine Gears

17 January 2007 11:54

The RENK gearbox for HSU/HSN single-engine propulsion systems, manufactured in the RENK Plant in Rheine, Germany, has proven its quality in thousands of propulsion systems.

Three years after its marketing, the new series RSV/RSH seems to follow its predecessor on the road of success. Based on the same technical principle, major components which have proven their reliability over three decades, are used in the new RSV/RSH series. However, with regard to the noise-optimised gear design and the arrangement of gearbox components, RENK took the challenge. As a result of these efforts a power range from 1.500kW to 22.000kW can be covered with centre distance from 500mm to 1,600mm by only 17 gearbox sizes.

Fine gear graduation and fixed PTO-centre distances have become the basis for the new program. The complete piping of all components, such as coolers, filters, electrical driven pumps etc., enables the minimisation of the installation work necessary on board and avoids interfaces, usually a source of complications. The new RENK type RSV/RSH gearbox is more compact, thus requiring less installation space and, thanks to its reduced dimension and weight, it can be fitted into the very short and narrow engine room compartments of modern ship designs.

The worldwide container market is growing continuously. Experts are predicting that the number of 71 million standard containers currently in service is expected to grow to 91 million TEU by 2008 which means an increase of almost 30%. While the race for the largest container vessel of the world is still going on - the 12,500 TEU capacity has been surpassed recently - a high demand for smaller container-feeder vessels has arisen.

In 2006, RENK AG in Rheine, Germany was able to obtain a considerable number of orders for RSV/RSH type gearboxes. Most of them are going to be installed in new container-feeder vessel of 650 to 1400 TEU at Chinese shipyards. The speed of medium-speed diesel engines is reduced to the propeller speeds of 110rpm to 160 rpm. The transmitted power of these propulsion systems can reach up to 12,000kW with corresponding gearbox shaft distances up to 1,200mm.
