Calculating Torsional Vibrations of Drives with Hydrodynamic Couplings

05 November 2004

A hydrodynamic coupling (fluid coupling) in the driveline has many positive characteristics. Positive features such as smooth starting, load-free motor run-up and torque limitation are widely known.

Another characteristic, the damping of torsional vibrations in the driveline, often receives less attention, although it is a highly beneficial feature. It reduces the load on the drive components and hence increases their service life. There are even applications where the damping of torsional vibrations through the fluid coupling is the main argument for their installation. A good example is in marine drives with high outputs.
