On February 27, 2003 an agreement between Euroyards – an association of some of the most important European Shipyards – and Sauer & Sohn has been signed. This agreement selects J.P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH (supplier of heavy-duty shipping-, industry- and Navy compressors) for a period of 2 years as the preferred sole supplier for starting- and service-air compressors (includes the 2-, and 3-stage air-cooled, the 2-stage water-cooled compressors together with the ALUP screw-compressor range).
Especially the 3-stage air-cooled compressors of Sauer contribute to a state-of-the-art ship design and to cost savings for the shipowner as well as for the shipyard. The missing cooling water system leads to less installation- and integration costs as the number of interfaces is reduced considerably. Shipyards are estimating the cost advantages with 3-5,000 USD per compressor.
Owners take advantage of the 3-stage air-cooled compressors by reduced maintenance costs. Due to the partition of the total compression ratio into 3 instead of the usual 2 stages (as with the traditional water-cooled compressors), lower compression temperatures will occur, the valves will not be soiled by oil coke even when using the standard mineral oil SAE-30.
Already in 1999 a frame agreement was concluded between Euroyards and Sauer – at that time with a Norwegian alternative supplier. The sole selection this time confirms the very competitive market position of Sauer Compressors.
