Sika - Sealants, Structural Adhesives, Teak Decking Systems and Acoustic Flooring Systems

Sika is the world leader in the development, the manufacture and the supply of an excellent service package of elastic yet structural sealants, adhesives and acoustical flooring systems to the marine industry. We are the acknowledged experts that ship owners and shipyards turn to first when they need a high-strength yet flexible adhesive for new build construction or repair work.

Sika produces a comprehensive range of fine sealants, adhesives and flooring compounds for cruise ship, ferry, leisure boat, luxury yacht, commercial ship and offshore equipment manufacturing yards. This extensive line of marine products - Sikaflex® - covers all of your caulking, levelling, bedding, protecting, sealing, bonding, glazing and acoustical flooring needs.

Sika's structural adhesives and sealants are in a position to replace labour intensive welding systems, can do away with cumbersome screwing and revetting systems and are able to bond and simultaneously seal numerous substrates of various make and origin such as steel, aluminium, GRP, wood, teak, painted substrate, plastic, stone, marble, glass and other difficult-to-bond substrates.

Sikaflex and SikaFast® adhesive bonding

Joints that are subject to extreme dynamic stresses require a long lasting, high strength, structural yet elastic adhesive exhibiting good gap-filling properties. Sikaflex-292, SikaFast-3161 and SikaFast-5211 are excellent examples of products with shock absorbing and vibration dampening properties highly capable of meeting the requirements of a punishing marine environment.

Sealing with Sikaflex flexible marine sealant

With its outstanding resistance to weathering and seawater, Sikaflex-291 is the perfect all-rounder; an all-purpose flexible marine sealant that bonds extremely well to all standard materials used in boat and ship construction. Its noteworthy elasticity ensures a durable long-lasting seal able to hold off water, dust, dirt, air, gasses, etc.

Marine caulking and teak decking systems

For timber and teak decks that need to be completely watertight and weather-resistant, Sika have developed Sikaflex-290 DC. This extremely easy-to-use, high-UV-resistant, one-component polyurethane deck-caulking compound can, once cured, be flush-sanded with the deck to supply a beautifully neat, clean finish.

Sika's marine teak deck maintenance system preserves and cares for new and weathered teakwood as well as for all other kinds of wood applied above the waterline. Sikaflex-290 DC and Sikaflex-298 are major elements of Sika's totally glued teak decking system.

Glazing of glass windows and panels

Successful bonding of organic "glass" panels and of safety, laminated and insulation mineral glass windows requires a UV-resistant adhesive with a high degree of elasticity. To ensure that thermal movements in between the flange and the pane are absorbed progressively without undue build-up of stresses, the use of Sikaflex-295 UV for organic and Sikaflex-296 for mineral glass is a must.

Both products combine the necessary elasticity with exactly the right consistency for maintaining the required bondline thickness and for adequate bridging of the tolerances. The UV-resistant properties of these Sikaflex sealant / adhesive products warrant endurance of the system as a back filler and bondline adhesive simultaneously.

Bedding - shock and noise absorption on-board ships

Sikaflex-298 represents a low-viscous, yet thixotropic, full-bodied adhesive that has been specially formulated for the waterproof flexible bonding of timber strip decking, of plastic and textile deck- and wall-coverings, of sandwich and prefabricated deck panels of stone, marble and granite tiles.

The permanent elastic layer of cured Sikaflex-298 supplies a cushioning effect, absorbs shock and minimizes transmission of impact sound.

Sika - marine adhesive and sealing expertise

For many years, leading manufacturers in the marine industry have appreciated the unique properties and outstanding quality of Sika's innovative products. The benefits are mutual: the feedback from our technical and commercial cooperation with builders of leisure boats and luxury yachts and with yards structuring ocean-going cruisers and ferries, cargo ships and tankers, fishing boats and research vessels helps us refine our technical know-how.

Sika's naval engineers, active worldwide, regularly visit customers to discuss their needs and to develop new applications for Sika's adhesive and sealing systems in collaboration with the end-user.

All Sika Marine products are Wheelmark-approved in accordance with the council directive 96/98/EC on marine equipment by the major authorities and the leading classification societies in compliance with the IMO rules.
