At our land-based test facility in Denmark, DHI have an optimal position to collect high-quality natural waters to prepare test waters with the salinities required in the IMO G8 guidelines, including freshwater.

Freshwater is collected in a nearby lake and transported to the test facility. Furthermore, we have established all testing procedures needed to conduct land-based test cycles with fresh and saline waters.

Many inland harbours are characterised by waters with low-salinities, or practically freshwater, including the harbours in the Great Lakes in the US. These conditions may be addressed by performance evaluation of ballast water management systems in fresh water.

Manufacturers of ballast water management systems are aware of the value of documented treatment in fresh water:

DHI business area manager Gitte I Petersen said: "DHI has recently been contacted by manufacturers of ballast water management systems showing interest in freshwater performance tests."
