LASS - Investigation into the Possible use of Lightweight Materials for Shipbuilding
Since January 2005, the project 'Lightweight Construction Applications at Sea' (LASS) has been investigating the possible use of lightweight materials for ship construction.
Several ground-breaking developments have been made, thanks to which it is today technically feasible for ship designers to use FRP (Fibre Reinforced Polymer) composites for ship constructions.
Both High Speed Crafts (HSCs) and SOLAS vessels for international transport have been part of this endeavour. Further, new possibilities for aluminium constructions at sea (ship building and offshore) have also been demonstrated.
A methodology for using combustible construction materials based on the new SOLAS regulation 17 'Alternative design and arrangements', has been developed in cooperation with the EU project SAFEDOR.
