Netherlands-based heavy-lift shipping company Jumbo has signed a letter of intent (LoI) with China Merchants Industry Holdings (CMIH) to conduct the detailed engineering and construction of a new DP2 heavy-lift crane vessel (HLCV).

The HLCV is due for delivery in the first quarter of 2020 and was jointly designed by Ulstein Design and Solutions and Jumbo’s Basis of Design.

It will be powered by dual fuel engines and has the ability to operate on liquefied natural gas (LNG).

“The HLCV will be equipped with two offshore mast cranes with a lifting capacity of 2,200t and 400t respectively, which will feature water depth ratings of 3,000m each.”

The HLCV will be equipped with two offshore mast cranes with a lifting capacity of 2,200t and 400t respectively, which will feature water depth ratings of 3,000m each.

The cranes were designed and built by Huisman Equipment and are expected to help Jumbo to meet its customer’s demands for additional lift capacities.

In addition, the flex-lay prepared HLCV will also feature a moon pool.

It is expected to cater to the global offshore energy industry upon completion by offering smarter and cost-efficient solutions for the installation of wind turbine foundations.

The vessel will also be used in the installation / decommissioning of fixed oil and gas facilities in shallow waters, as well as the installation of moorings systems and floating structures in deeper waters and fitting subsea structures, foundations and (flex-lay) tie-backs, among others.

Jumbo managing director Michael Kahn said: “Despite the current offshore climate, we are committing to this industry long term.

“Signing this Letter of Intent alongside CMIH, with their partnering mentality, is a key milestone for Jumbo’s offshore division to further step-up, scale-up and diversify into the global offshore energy market.”

The company currently possesses a fleet of ten heavy-lift vessels, which offer a variety of lifting capacities ranging from 650t to 3,000t.
