Bangladesh Unveils Port Development Plan

Bangladesh will set up a deep-sea port at Sonadia Island and construct a new container terminal at Pangaon to boost its maritime activities, the government has said.

The government is also planning to construct new river ports at Noapara, Bhairab-Ashuganj and Barguna and land ports at Teknaf, Hili, Banglabandha and Bibirbazar.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said only 40% of Chittagong Port and 10% of Mongla Port is being currently used, dailystar.net reports.

Hasina added revenue earning will more than double when usage is increased.

The government will purchase two vessels and introduce computerised container terminal management system at Chittagong Port, Hasina said.
