US Deploys Radiation Detectors at Ports

05 February 2010

The US National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) said it has completed the deployment and testing of radiation detection technology at three ports in Mexico and Panama.

The systems at Mexico's Port of Manzanillo and Panama's Colon Container Terminal and Port of Cristobal will scan cargo for nuclear and radioactive materials.

The new systems will prevent dangerous nuclear and radiological materials from being smuggled in shipping containers transiting the global maritime system, the NNSA said.

The nuclear agency has also completed the deployment of radiation sensors at Panamanian seaports.

The Mexican facility is the third to receive the technology, with another set for completion in the next fiscal year.
