India to Expand Port Capacity

India has invited bids to expand its port capacity to 1.2 billion tons.

The bids are for 25 port projects worth $5.4bn.

The Indian Government is also implementing the National Maritime Development Programme at an investment of $21bn out of which $12bn will be spent on ports.

The expansion plans are due to come into effect by March 2012.
