ABB has provided an upgraded DEGO IV vessel control software package for installation on-board Stena Line's Stena Scotia freight ferry.

The fourth generation software has already been installed on the vessel, and features an advanced speed governor and actuation system to offer a greater degree of control over the ferry’s propulsion system.

It also helps reduce the vessel’s roll and rudder movements for fuel conservation purposes.

DEGO IV is designed to collect data from the vessel's on-board sensors, monitoring 60 shipboard parameters such as engine performance and propeller performance, as well as rudder / vessel centre of gravity torque and real-time navigational information.

The software also uses the collected data to model a control strategy to reduce ship roll, adjusting to changing sea or ship conditions by simulating the next two roll periods in order to optimise roll-damping against fuel consumption.

"The latest generation of our DEGO system is an excellent example of the way our integrated solutions help to optimise the energy efficiency of ships."

ABB Marine and Ports Business managing director Juha Koskela said: “The latest generation of our DEGO system is an excellent example of the way our integrated solutions help to optimise the energy efficiency of ships, ranging from newbuildings to vessels with years in service such as Stena Scotia.

“In a society that demands shipping becomes more sustainable, and rules and regulations on green shipping are becoming more stringent, we as ABB put great effort into helping our customers meet their needs.”

Stena Scotia features a 120-trailer capacity and is equipped with a twin-propelling system. It is currently providing Ro-Ro services between Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Killingholme in the UK.

The vessel previously trialled ABB’s torque monitoring system Torductor Marine last year, which has been developed to measure propeller shaft performance in order to verify the ship's performance in accordance with the International Marine Organisation’s Ship’s Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP).
