US-based simulation technology developer Altair has collaborated with Intergraph Process, Power & Marine (PP&M) to develop an interface that transfers a complete structural model from Intergraph Smart 3D software to Altair’s HyperMesh interface.

Once developed, the HyperMesh and Smart 3D users will be able to use the new integrated interface for the designing and engineering of marine vessels.

Altair said that the Smart 3D to HyperMesh interface allows export of 3D model at any stage in the vessel design or construction process in an XML format into HyperMesh.

The configurable, filter-based interface also enables export of structural model hierarchy and all components including a full description of the objects, all properties and geometry.

"Once developed, the HyperMesh and Smart 3D users will be able to use the new integrated interface for the designing and engineering of marine vessels."

Altair business development, marine and shipbuilding industry senior director Molly Heskitt said: “HyperMesh’s superiority in preparation, geometry simplification, and clean-up is particularly suited to handle the simulations and analysis associated with extremely large structures such as ships and offshore structures.

“As a unique simulation technology and engineering service company, Altair understands the engineering challenges that our marine customers are facing and is committed to continually invest in providing powerful technology to help them optimise efficiency and be more competitive.

“Adding this marine specific interface is another example of that commitment.”

The Integraph Smart 3D is currently being used by various shipyards and has been specifically designed for plant, offshore, shipbuilding and the metals and mining industries.

Altair HyperMesh interface is also currently in use by various classification societies.

The company noted that marine engineering and design companies are presently using various 3D modelling tools to make suitable models to perform analysis, with an aim to meet regulatory and classification approvals.

Within the shipbuilding sector, the 3D models must embody a global model that features all structural plates, stiffeners, members and openings with their mechanical properties including material grade, plate thicknesses and profile cross-section sizes.
