Frequentis to upgrade Ports of Jersey control centre systems

Austrian high-tech company Frequentis has been contracted by the Ports of Jersey to upgrade its existing control centre systems.

Under the ten-year maintenance contract, facilitated with an integrated communication system, Frequentis will introduce its vessel traffic service (VTS) which is said to enhance the integration level, creating an open interface architecture which will facilitate interoperability with neighbouring coastguard services, aligned with IALA V-128 standard.

The deal will see Frequentis deliver a range of equipments including its vessel traffic management service, MCS 3020 IP Voice Communication System, as well as digital scan converter, event logging and Search and Rescue Information System.

"The Frequentis team has been flexible to our challenges and innovative in designing a solution to facilitate our Coastguard and VTS function while integrating to other specialist systems we employ."

According to Frequentis Maritime director Khashayar Saravandi-Rad, the equipment to be delivered is scheduled to undergo the factory acceptance test (FAT).

An upgrade of the control centre, towers, multiple radios, radars and automatic identification system sites is expected to fortify Ports of Jersey to engage in surveillance and cater to the future requirements of communications.

Ports of Jersey Coastguard and VTS manager Russell Mathew said: "From initial engagement through to tender award, the Frequentis team has been flexible to our challenges and innovative in designing a solution to facilitate our Coastguard and VTS function while integrating to other specialist systems we employ.

"Ports of Jersey operates a 24/7 Coastguard and VTS in a challenging environment, with both commercial and dense leisure traffic requiring reliable communications and effective traffic image to ensure the safe movement of vessels and co-ordination of Maritime SAR (search-and-rescue)."
