Global Container Terminals has unveiled a plan to expand its container terminal capacity on Bayonne waterfront in the Port of New York & New Jersey in the US.
The new 70-acre container terminal will be built near its existing facility and is scheduled to open in 2014.
Bayonne terminal is designed to handle the largest container vessels at greater throughput density per acre and is claimed to be the most advanced marine terminal in the Port of New York and New Jersey.
The new container handling technology is expected to improve safety and security for the International Longshoremen's Association (ILA), AFL-CIO workforce.
Global Container Terminals president and CEO James Devine said,"Our expanded Global Terminal facility will come on line precisely in time to help meet the demands of larger vessels transiting the Suez Canal and new wider Panama Canal."
Global Container will make use of land acquired by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 2007, which ensures that scarce waterfront property would be used for waterfront business.
The company said that since ships going to its facilities on New York Bay don't pass under the Bayonne Bridge, they are not affected by the bridge's limitations, and large ships passing through the widened Panama Canal and the Suez Canal will be able to dock at the expanded Bayonne facility.
The new gate facilities at the terminal will be expanded to 29 lanes from 16 lanes and latest technology will be used for gate operation to speed up truck movement at the gates.
With an annual moving capacity of 1.7 million teu, the new terminal will use 20 remote-controlled rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs) to sort containers in ten diagonal stacks, each with capacity of 1,665teu, including plugs for refrigerated equipment.
