Mobile satellite communications services provider Inmarsat has launched its latest service Fleet Media, which offers entertainment for travellers at sea.

This new facility has been developed in cooperation with NT Digital Partners, a joint venture between global content agency Spafax and the non-theatrical distributor Swank Motion Pictures.

According to Inmarsat, the service will be able to provide visual content, including international blockbuster films, television programming, as well as sports and news.

Inmarsat Maritime president Ronald Spithout said: “This is a revolutionary service for Inmarsat and for the maritime sector.

“This service bridges that gap allowing seafarers to be more integrated and connected with their lives ashore than ever before.”

“It has been uniquely designed to support the industry in attracting and retaining their skilled personnel, as it serves as a game-changing differentiating factor in recruitment.

“While life at sea has historically been socially isolated, this service bridges that gap allowing seafarers to be more integrated and connected with their lives ashore than ever before. Fleet Media brings life on land to those living at sea.”

The content will be available to crew across the Inmarsat network for on-demand and offline viewing.

The turnkey technology solution is simple to integrate with the existing Inmarsat equipment without any additional data charges.

Currently, the service is available on XpressLink and will soon be accessible across the wider Inmarsat Maritime portfolio, the company stated.

Inmarsat said the entertainment facility will help seafarers connect with the outside world and their homes, improving quality of life while aboard a vessel.
