China-based dry bulk transportation provider Pacific Basin Shipping has completed installation of KVH Industries' mini-VSAT Broadband solution on its 99 vessels.

Pacific Basin Shipping currently operates a fleet of modern Handysize and Supramax dry bulk ships.

The fully integrated solution that was installed on Pacific Basin vessels consists of antenna hardware, control units, and all connecting cables.

KVH further noted that the mini-VSAT Broadband solution includes the mini-VSAT Broadband service, the TracPhone V7-IP Ku-band antenna system and an Iridium OpenPort for backup.

The solution also features a customised CommBox management solution and the IP-MobileCast content delivery service, which allows the streaming of international news channels.

"Aside from the obvious business requirements, we at Pacific Basin see value in enabling our seafarers to keep in contact with family and friends through the Internet."

The mini-VSAT is covered by the KVH OneCare extended warranty and features myKVH portal, which provides vessel location, connection details, management, and control of on board data usage.

Pacific Basin Shipping marine general manager Uttam Jaiswal said: “Satellite communications continue to become more cost-effective over time as requirements rapidly grow for bandwidth and speed.

“Aside from the obvious business requirements, we at Pacific Basin see value in enabling our seafarers to keep in contact with family and friends through the Internet.

“The new equipment will also enhance shore-to-ship crew training and support for safe ship operations.”

The company currently has a fleet of more than 200 owned and chartered ships, which provide shipping services to around 500 industrial producers, traders, and users of dry bulk commodities worldwide.
