Germany's Alfa Laval has secured a deal to provide its PureBallast 3.1 ballast water treatment system for 11 RoRo vessels owned by Stamco Ship Management.

The PureBallast 3.1 system won US Coast Guard (USCG) type approval in December last year, and will be retrofitted on the selected Stamco Ship Management RoRo vessels under the new agreement.

The system will also enable vessel operators to comply with the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Ballast Water Management (BWM) Convention, which is scheduled to be effective by September.

Alfa Laval PureBallast marine division head Anders Lindmark said: “This order is directly tied to the USCG type approval of PureBallast. Since the type approval was announced, Alfa Laval has seen a clear increase in the number of inquiries about the system.

"Alfa Laval is well prepared, not only with type approved systems, but also with a decade of experience and a worldwide organisation ready to deliver."

“The high interest in PureBallast is a clear sign that the retrofit market is opening up.

PureBallast includes four different UV reactor sizes jointly developed by Alfa Laval and Wallenius Water, based on Wallenius water technology.

The current USCG type approval covers flows of 150-3000m³/h based on the 300m³ and 1000m³/h reactor, while PureBallast is based on the 170m³ and 600m³/h variants.

Alfa Laval expects to receive type approval after completing an evaluation of a mathematically modelled reactor scaling of the system.
