Wärtsilä has collaborated with Singapore's Keppel Shipyard (KSL) to ease the process of retrofitting ship ballast water management systems (BWMS) for ship owners and operators.

The deal is expected to facilitate cooperation and communication opportunities between various marine industry partners ahead of the planned implementation of the International Maritime Organisation’s (IMO) convention for ballast water management by September.

Both Wärtsilä and KSL seek to offer relevant information and assistance regarding BWMS to the vessel owners and operators as part of the cooperation agreement.

The latest partnership will be benefitted from Wärtsilä’s experience and expertise in BWMS technology, as well as design engineering, product supply, installation supervision, commissioning and after-sales services.

KSL will also provide the dry docking facilities and the necessary installation resources.

A complete and customised engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) capability will be offered under the new collaboration.

Wärtsilä has also collaborated with other shipyards to provide smooth BWMS retrofitting services, in addition to KSL.

"Wärtsilä has taken a proactive approach to preparing for the BWM convention regulations, and consequently we are very well placed to aid customers to meet these upcoming requirements."

Wärtsilä services project sales general manager Markus Ljungkvist said: “Wärtsilä has taken a proactive approach to preparing for the BWM convention regulations taking effect, and consequently we are very well placed to aid customers as they prepare to meet these upcoming requirements.

“We are pleased to cooperate with major shipyards such as Keppel Shipyard, since by working together we can provide a valuable service to ship owners in complying with the new regulations.”

The company currently operates BWMS production facilities in the UK and China.

Wärtsilä also has BWMS manufacturing agreements with several China-based companies, including COSCO Weihai and CSSC JiuJiang.
