Shore-side monitoring of at-sea crews can be a complex task to undertake, particularly with typical personnel workloads increasing amid a decrease in crew numbers and the introduction of ever-larger vessels meaning more has to be done, with less.

ShipIn Systems’ FleetVision platform was introduced in 2019 to reduce pressure on seafarers, shipowners and operators by offering insight into piloting, security, cargo handling and maintenance.

The platform also assists in the gathering of data from assets onboard to improve decision making, encouraging collaboration between vessels owners, managers and crew.

ShipIn Systems’ research suggests that ships using this technology experienced a 40% loss reduction and an 8% increase in efficiency. Due to the visibility of low-traffic areas onboard, early hazard detection is possible and external damages are less likely.

Osher Perry, Founder and CEO at ShipIn Systems, says: “This type of technology has the potential to reduce the likelihood of piracy, stowaways and drug smuggling operations.

“It can also help shipowners to secure reduced insurance premiums, by demonstrating their ability to identify hazards and improve collaboration between ship and shore in real-time.”

According to Perry, it is important that ships maintain strong contact with shore after they leave port so that it is possible to know what is happening on board. This is particularly important when reporting incidents such as fire, piracy or sinking.

As all activities are stored in an analytics dashboard, the platform is designed to improve understanding of performance. In addition, remote audits are made possible.

Perry says: “What makes this technology different from traditional maritime CCTV is the immediate, real-time visual analytics it provides.

“Instead of painstakingly watching 10,000 hours of footage per vessel per month in the hopes to determine retroactively what may have occurred onboard after an incident has occurred, ShipIn’s technology creates real-time intelligence teams can use immediately to shape safety protocols and onboard behaviour.”

Perry says: “A lack of data can also make understanding the cause of incidents a long, drawn-out process. Investigating incidents can take years, which is far from ideal when witness statements rely on what crew or eyewitnesses ‘think’ they saw.

“For example, the results of the loss of the Golden Ray, which capsized off the coast of Georgia, took two years to complete. It’s unlikely that a shipping company can make any changes in safety or in operations to prevent such an occurrence from happening again without the right data to hand.”

The platform can detect discrete events but also monitors routine events such as maintenance and bridge activity. Staff onboard and onshore are alerted to any safety violations. Areas for training or operational improvements can be easily identified as a result of enhanced visibility.

ShipIn Systems suggests that the cause of most incidents is 96% attributed to human error as a result of lack of training, ineffective processes, or violations of safety protocol.

Perry says: “ShipIn Systems focuses on unlocking ship-to-shore collaboration for maritime fleets by using visual analytics. Its FleetVision platform creates a digital bridge between ship and shore to proactively alert shipowners, managers, and seafarers to onboard events in real-time.

“The technology uses CCTV cameras onboard vessels to provide insights into areas such as navigation, security and cargo operations. Access to this type of data makes it easier for shipping companies and their crew to benchmark operational performance, perform remote audits and improve commercial performance.

“These solutions have been developed by an ambition to help create a safer, more productive and sustainable marine industry through the advancement of technological innovation.”
