Switzerland-based technology group ABB has been selected to deliver electric, digital and connected solutions for the new Project 790 superyacht built at the Nobiskrug shipyard in Germany.

The ABB solutions are expected to help the superyacht to meet the International Maritime Organization’s new ‘Tier III’ regulations.

Scheduled to be fully enforced by 2021, the regulations seek to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from the superyacht sector by 70% compared to current limits.

Nobiskrug’s Project 790 is expected to be delivered to its owner next year.

Development of the 80m vessel is based on a partnership between the designers, Nobiskrug and ABB.

“Powered by two of ABB’s compact gearless steerable Azipod C propulsion units, the superyacht will consume 20% less fuel than vessels operating on traditional shaftline propulsion systems.”

ABB Marine and Ports managing director Juha Koskela said: “It is evident that superyacht owners are taking a closer interest in technical aspects of vessel performance, efficiency and environmental profile.

“ABB’s technology is at the heart of this visionary vessel, helping make it one of the most energy efficient superyachts ever built.”

Project 790 will be equipped with ABB’s Onboard DC Grid power and distribution system to provide additional efficiency to the vessel by allowing the engines to work at variable speeds and run on stored energy.

Onboard DC Grid is also capable of integrating with other next-generation energy sources, including renewables.

Powered by two of ABB’s compact gearless steerable Azipod C propulsion units, the superyacht will consume 20% less fuel than vessels operating on traditional shaftline propulsion systems.

Azipod propulsion is also designed to release reduced amount of noise and vibration, as well as increase passenger and crew comfort, and offer high maneuverability.

In addition, Nobiskrug’s Project 790 will include ABB’s integrated Power and Energy Management System (PEMS) to automatically control load sharing between energy sources.
