ABB has won a set of contracts to provide its Ability Marine Advisory System – Octopus marine software to nine heavy-lift vessels that are currently being deployed to expand the Tengiz oil field in Kazakhstan by Tengizchevroil (TCO).

Following installation, Octopus is set to improve the safety and efficiency of the vessels by indicating the optimal route based on weather and forecasted vessel motions.

The vessels are being used to transport project modules weighing up to 1,800t from fabrication yards in South Korea and Europe to the transhipment ports in the Black and Baltic seas, and eventually to western Kazakhstan.

In order to conduct the transportation work, TCO previously contracted Chinese shipping company, Cosco Shipping, which then subcontracted part of the work to its partners, including NYK Group, Chung Yang Shipping, Dongbang Transport Logistics, Hanjin Transportation, and CJ Korea Express, resulting in the contracts being awarded to ABB.

As part of the latest orders, ABB will also install sensors on each vessel to create real-time roll and motion data for both the vessel and on-board cargo.

“Together with our partners, we have been contracted to ensure the safe and timely delivery of project modules into Kazakhstan.”

The data can be accessed by the officers on the bridge and support teams onshore to ensure safety and protection of the cargo.

Cosco Shipping Heavy Transport chief operating officer Marc Beerendonk said: “Together with our partners, we have been contracted to ensure the safe and timely delivery of project modules into Kazakhstan.

“We already have considerable experience of using ABB’s Octopus software, as our own semi-submersible heavy-lift fleet has used the system for a number of years.”

ABB’s Octopus software is currently estimated to be used by 90% of heavy-lift vessels.
