SEACOR Marine has selected American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) to upgrade one of its existing offshore support vessels (OSV) that will use hybrid power to operate in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM).

As part of the arrangement, ABS will provide the BATTERY-Li notation for the Maya OSV, which is currently being modified to use lithium battery power as propulsion.

The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by May this year.

SEACOR Marine’s joint venture operates Maya OSV in Mexico, Mantenimiento Express Maritimo SAPI (MEXMAR).

SEACOR Engineering manager Tim Clerc said: “The hybrid power solution on the SEACOR Maya has the potential to significantly reduce fuel consumption by as much as 20%.

SEACOR has also contracted ABS to provide the optional BATTERY-Li notation on three other OSVs operated by MEXMAR.

The vessels are expected to be upgraded to a similar battery system as Maya OSV. The upgrade is due to be completed by July this year.

In December last year, ABS was selected by Q-LNG to class an articulated tug barge (ATB) used for liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering in North America.

Construction of the vessel is expected to begin at VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, Mississippi, US, this year.
