The Government of Canada has extended the ban on cruise ship operations until October amid the ongoing global Covid-19 pandemic.

Minister of Transport Marc Garneau announced the updated measures regarding the cruise ships and passenger vessels.

Cruise ships that carry over 100 people onboard with overnight accommodations will not be allowed to enter Canadian waters until 31 October.

Additionally, passenger vessels with over 12 people will also not be allowed to enter the Arctic coastal waters, including Nunatsiavut, Nunavik and the Labrador Coast until 31 October.

From 1 July, other passenger vessels should adhere to the requirements of provincial, territorial, local and regional health authorities for processes and timelines for resuming services.

Ferries, water taxis and other essential passenger vessels should continue operations with reduced passengers and other Covid-19 mitigation measures.

Garneau said: “Our government is committed to protecting Canadians, particularly during these challenging times. It is for that reason I am announcing updated measures for cruise ships and other passenger vessels in Canada, which includes prohibiting larger cruise ships from operating in Canadian waters until 31 October 2020.

“Our government continues to work with other levels of government, transportation industry stakeholders and indigenous peoples to re-examine measures and to ensure Canada’s transportation system remains safe and secure during this time. We are all in this together.”

The restrictions in Artic Waters does not include pleasure craft used by local communities or those used for fishing, harvesting and other similar activities.

Last month, the Australian Border Force said that all cruise ships capable of carrying more than 100 passengers are prohibited from operating in Australian waters until 17 September.
