Denmark-based Celsius Tankers has placed orders for a series of four liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers with South Korea-based shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

These newbuilds will enter into long term time charters with Gunvor Group subsidiary Clearlake Shipping.

SHI is expected to deliver the new ships between 2023 and 2024.

The LNG carriers will be designed in line with Lloyds’ Register class notation ‘EEDI-3’ to fulfil the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements for vessels built after 2025 to have a 30% increase in energy efficiency.

The ships will feature air lubrication as well as improved hull shapes to reduce CO₂ emissions and methane slip.

By deploying the ‘best available paint system’, the vessels will experience less friction when in the water.

Furthermore, the newbuilds will be equipped with ME-GA propulsion.

Previously, Celsius Tankers received the fourth and last LNG carrier from a previous series of 180,000m³ XDF vessels ordered from SHI in 2018.

Compared to these previous four vessels, the latest newbuilds will provide additional improvements, such as reduced emissions and fuel consumption.

The company aims to cut down its environmental impact through design improvements on upcoming newbuilds.

We have further committed to convert 100% of our fleet to eco-vessels by 2027.”
