International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) subsidiary Contecon Guayaquil (CGSA) has received approval from the Ecuadorian Ministry of Transport and Public Works to handle mega vessels at the Port of Guayaquil.

Following receipt of approval, CGSA will be able to accommodate two mega vessels up to 305m in length at the port’s berths two and three simultaneously.

Approval granted by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Transport and Public Works is expected to bolster the company’s market position as the main trading gateway in the country and also improve efficiency and productivity.

In January this year, Ecuador President Lenin Moreno visited CGSA to inaugurate the Port of Guayaquil’s expansion.

Moreno said: “In these facilities, the Contecon concessionaire invested $10m. This amount is part of the $325m they pledged to invest 20 years up to 2027 on Port Authority grounds.

“Its berth line is 1,627m long with a maximum controlling depth of 12.5m.”

“However, we should highlight that, in these ten years, Contecon has already invested $360m more than expected.”

CGSA currently operates six quay cranes and four mobile harbour cranes that can handle nine vessels simultaneously depending on vessel sizes.

Its berth line is 1,627m long with a maximum controlling depth of 12.5m.

In addition, the 115.4ha terminal can handle up to 1.4 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) of cargo annually. It can also facilitate the export of Ecuador’s main commodity of bananas with a 3,627-plug reefer facility and dedicated storage and consolidation spaces.

ICTSI currently operates two ports in Mexico, with one each in Ecuador, Honduras, Colombia, Brazil and Argentina under various concessions.

The company is operating the container and multipurpose terminals at the Port of Guayaquil as part of its 20-year operating concession awarded by the Autoridad Portuario de Guayaquil (APG) authority in March 2007.
