A number of cruise lines have announced the suspension of its cruise line operations to reduce the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19) on their ships.

Last week, Princess Cruises decided to stop all cruise trips for two months. Two of Princess Cruises ships, Diamond Princess and Grand Princess, were the most affected by the virus.

In the same week, Viking also announced a temporary operation suspension across the world until 1 May.

In other development, the Government of Canada has postponed the cruise ship season in the country to 1 July from 2 April.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

UK-based Fred Olsen Cruise Lines (FOCL) plans to suspend all its cruise operations. FOCL said that it aims to safely transport all its guests and crew home.

The subsequent itineraries of the cruise line will not proceed after the existing cruises are completed. FOCL hopes to commence its operations on 23 May.

The UK Government recently advised citizens who are aged above 70 and have health issues to not board cruise ships.

Cunard Line

UK-based Cunard Line has suspended its new North American departures from 14 March.

The suspension is scheduled to continue for a month and operations will resume on 11 April.

The cruise line operator is currently reaching out to guests who will be affected by the suspended cruise trips.

Holland America Line

British–American-owned cruise line Holland America Line has issued a voluntarily suspension for its global cruise operations for 30 days.

The suspension will apply to all 14 of its cruise ships.

The cruise line had three cruises that were scheduled to leave over the weekend and were cancelled. Guests will receive 100% cruise cost refund and 100% future cruise credit.

Royal Caribbean Cruises

On 14 March, Royal Caribbean Cruises has cancelled all its cruise operations around the world due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Previously, the company stopped all cruises to the United States for 30 days. The operations are scheduled to resume on 11 April.

Last week, Royal Caribbean Cruises increased credit capacity by $550m to strengthen its liquidity.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line has suspended all its five cruise ship operations around the world for 30 days.

Passengers whose cruises are cancelled will be provided with a 125% fare refund that can be used until 31 December 2021. Guests who do not want the future cruise credit will receive a 100% refund.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has suspended all its operations across North America and they are expected to resume on 10 April.

Costa Cruises

Italy-based Costa Cruises has also suspended all its global operations until 3 April.

Last week, Costa changed the itineraries of the ships that will dock at Italian ports, following Italy’s lockdown.

MSC Cruises

In light of port restrictions by different countries and ports over Covid-19, MSC Cruises has cancelled and adjusted some of its cruises.

The company added that there are no confirmed coronavirus cases on any of its cruise ships.

Passengers affected will receive a voucher that is equal in value to the fare along with a credit.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has announced that all of its cruises have been suspended on 13 March and are expected to resume operations on 12 April.

For cruise trips between 13 to 17 March, passengers will receive 150% future cruise credit of the fare paid, while cruises from 18 March to 11 April will receive a 125% future cruise credit.

Cruise Lines International Association

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has announced that it has voluntarily and temporarily suspended cruise ship operations from US ports for 30 days.

CLIA President and CEO Kelly Craighead said: “This is an unprecedented situation. Our industry has taken responsibility for protecting public health for more than 50 years, working under the guidance of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and prides itself on its ability to deliver exceptional vacation experiences for guests, as well as meaningful employment opportunities for crew. This has been a challenging time but we hope that this decision will enable us to focus on the future and a return to normal as soon as possible.”
