Damen Shipyards Group has secured a contract from global public transport company Arriva Danmark to provide five fully electric ferries that will serve Copenhagen, Denmark.

The contract follows a tender process, during which Damen’s engineering team conducted various studies to explore the best possible solution for Arriva Danmark.

To be valid for 12 years, the deal will see Damen building the ferries using its 2306 E3 model, which are designed to offer environmentally friendly, efficient and economically viable operations.

Arriva Danmark Bus director Torben Hansen said: “This is the third consecutive occasion that Arriva has secured the contract to provide this service to the City of Copenhagen.

“This new vessel order is perfectly aligned with our role at the forefront of the switch from diesel to electric power.

“Damen has proven to be the right partner for this project.

Arriva Danmark’s ferries will be designed to carry at least 60 passengers and will be able to fit into the existing infrastructure of the city of Copenhagen.

At the jetties situated at each end of the route to be served by the ferries, Damen will install fast charging points.

The ferries are set to offer very low noise and vibrations as they will not be powered by diesel engines.

The vessels’ passenger area will feature very large windows to safeguard the passengers from the wind.

Their wheelhouse will be raised to the highest possible position so as to offer an optimal viewpoint to the operators.

The steel-hulled vessels will also include strong fenders to further ensure reliability.
