Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract to deliver two Modular Multi Cats 1205 to Canadian marine solutions provider Group Ocean.

The Multi Cats are made of standard, container-sized units and have been designed for easy transportation worldwide.

They are expected to serve as dredging support vessels on an oil sands project in the north of Canada.

Damen noted that the oil sands tailings ponds that the vessels are set to work on are located inland and not easily accessible by water.

However, the Modular Multi Cats can be transported easily to the site by truck and assembled for operation on location.

"The speed with which we are able to deliver these vessels really goes to show the unique advantages of standardised shipbuilding as practiced at Damen."

Damen previously provided all technical support and the steel / component package for the construction of Ocean’s first trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), which took place at Ocean’s shipyard.

Ocean Marine Works and Dredging business development director Tommy Theriault said: “In addition to the ease with which we can transport these vessels to inaccessible locations quickly and cost-effectively, Damen’s standardised shipbuilding process meant that they already had one of the vessels on stock for extremely fast delivery.

“It will also allow us more flexibility for future development across Canada.”

The first of the two Multi Cats was in stock at the time of purchase and is scheduled to be delivered next month.

The second vessel is currently being built at Damen Shipyards Kozle in Poland and will follow in the second quarter of this year.

Damen North America regional sales manager Daan Dijxhoorn said: “The speed with which we are able to deliver these vessels, as well as the convenience that results from modular construction, really goes to show the unique advantages of standardised shipbuilding as practiced at Damen.”

The Damen Multi Cat is used for towing and anchor-handling, dive support, marine engineering and offshore energy operations, as well as dredging and dredging support activities.
