Damen Song Cam Shipyard, along with its joint venture partner Song Cam Shipyard, held a keel-laying ceremony for the electric RSD-E Tug 2513 in Vietnam.

The electric RSD-E Tug 2513 is being built for the Ports of Auckland, New Zealand.

The world’s first fully electric tug with 70 tonnes bollard pull is expected to help meet the Ports of Auckland’s goal of being a zero-emissions operation by 2040.

With 80% of power in the country already being generated from clean energy sources, the tug is expected to finish a green energy cycle in the ports.

Damen Song Cam Shipyard general director Joris van Tienen said: “We are very excited to make a start on the construction of this innovative vessel. We are also very proud to be maintaining our schedule during this challenging time when the coronavirus pandemic continues around the world. This is due to the enormous efforts our staff have gone to in order to ensure a safe working environment.”

The vessel is a completely electric version of Damen’s standard platform, the next-generation RSD Tug 2513.

Damen has designed the vessel with focus on safety, sustainability, reliability and efficiency.

The new vessel will be named Sparky. Over 50% of the 8,000 people who took part in selecting a name voted for Sparky as a name.

Damen said that the RSD-E Tug 2513 is an example of efficient solutions that the company is building as part of its goal of becoming a sustainable shipbuilder.

The company delivered fully electric ferries to Denmark, electric and hybrid ferries to Canada and an electric cutter suction dredger.

Damen also said that it is applying standardisation and digital connectivity to the development of vessels that meet the sustainable maritime future requirements.

A few days ago, public transport company Arriva Denmark received five Damen Ferries 2306 E3 from Damen Shipyards Group.
