Damen Marine Components (DMC) has secured a contract from Brunvoll Volda to supply rudders and steering gear for SunStone Ships’ expedition cruise ship.

China Merchants Heavy Industries is building the fifth Infinity-class 200 pax polar vessel for SunStone Ships to an Ulstein design.

DMC is working with propulsion specialist Brunvoll Volda on the series of vessels.

According to the contract, DMC will supply two Van der Velden Atlantic rudders and two Van der Velden Commander rotary vane steering gear systems.

The full-spade Atlantic rudder has a surface area of 8m² and steering gear torque of 110kNm. The Commander steering gear has a simple and compact design and is a dependable choice for long-distance, open-ocean vessels.

DMC’s advanced sealing technology is mounted inside closed housings. It prevents internal leakage and ensures extended seal life.

Its components form an integral part of the system supply from Brunvoll, including gearboxes and propellers, rudders, steering gear, a tunnel thruster and control systems.

Damen Marine Components sales and marketing director Wim Knoester said: “We are glad that Damen Marine Components is part of the Infinity-class project.

“We are looking forward to continuing our relationship with our partners Brunvoll Volda and completing the initial agreement of ten vessels.”

Sunstone Ships’ Infinity-class is 104m-long. It has an 18m-wide beam and a draught of 5.3m. The vessel can accommodate up to 200 passengers and 115 crew members.

Additional features of the vessel include Ulstein’s X-BOW design, dynamic positioning and zero speed stabilisers.

In September, the first vessel Greg Mortimer was delivered and is chartered to Aurora Cruises Australia.

The Ocean Victory, the Ocean Explorer, the Ocean Odyssey and the Ocean Discoverer are scheduled for delivery in September 2020, February 2021, March 2022 and September 2022 respectively.
