DNV GL, Kongsberg Maritime (KM) and Subsea 7 have completed the pilot testing of KM’s DP Digital Survey (KMDS) application.
During the trial, a remote digital verification tool on the Subsea 7 vessel Seven Kestrel was tested for dynamic positioning (DP) systems as part of DNV GL’s Data Smart Classification (D-Class project).

In March, DNV GL launched the first fleet-wide remote survey scheme for some inspections in the classification industry.
Under the new system, a DNV GL surveyor is not required to travel to the vessel to complete some surveys. Instead, input provided by the customer and crew is used to prove compliance.
The new scheme has not only saved travel expenses but also reduced waiting time and vessel downtime.
Subsea 7 marine technical manager Bryce Heslop said: “The test methodology used within the application also empowers the crew to take ownership of the system and give them greater confidence in the DP system setup on board their vessel.

In 2017, DNV GL rolled out the D-Class Project, aimed at decreasing the burden of verifying DP systems by boosting efficiency and maintaining effectiveness, as well as safety standards.
As part of the D-Class project, DNV GL started a pilot to observe the possibility of using KM’s DP Digital Survey tool in annual verification trials.
During the piloting phase, the tool on board Subsea7 took data directly from the vessel’s control systems and transmitted to a secure Cloud, where it was assessed by expert verifiers, class, and vendors.
DNV GL DP systems senior principal specialist Aleks Karlsen said: “With this pilot, we have proof-of-concept for using the KMDS application for verification of DP systems.
“This technology has the potential to provide secure and tamper-proof collection of system-generated data, which can be used as evidence for performing objective remote office assessment by class.”
