Japanese company Fujitsu and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have conducted a field trial of artificial intelligence (AI) ship collision risk prediction technology.

The field trial of the ‘Fujitsu Human Centric AI Zinrai’ technology was aimed at analysing marine traffic risks in the Singapore Strait.

Developed by Fujitsu Laboratories, the technology leverages the power of AI in predicting near misses between vessels.

It is capable of detecting ship collision risks and can predict areas where collision risks are concentrated as dynamic risk hotspots.

When deployed in a vessel traffic service (VTS) system, the technology assists maritime traffic controllers in managing marine traffic proactively to improve navigation safety.

By 2020, Fujitsu aims to deliver services with this technology for maritime traffic controllers and ship operators.

“The trial of the risk detection technology demonstrated the possibility of quantifying risk in detail in advance of the detection by human operators.”

About ten MPA officers from the Vessel Traffic Management Department and Port Systems Division assisted Fujitsu with regard to the research and testing of the Fujitsu Human Centric AI Zinrai technology for two years.

Fujitsu used past traffic data for the Singapore Strait provided by MPA and leveraged its collision risk prediction technology to extract information such as examples of collisions or near misses involving multiple vessels.

The trial of the risk detection technology demonstrated the possibility of quantifying risk in detail in advance of the detection by human operators.

The technology could also select scenarios where the collision risk could be overlooked and raise the alert to a possible collision incident.

Fujitsu will use the results of the development and will continue to work with Singapore to improve the technology.
