HullWiper has signed an agreement with subsea service provider Talleres Industriales to jointly offer economical and eco-friendly hull cleaning services in the Panama Canal area.

The deal is part of HullWiper’s global leasing programme launched last year, which aims to work with partners worldwide to provide ship owners and operators a brush / diver free and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional hull cleaning methods.

As part of the new agreement, HullWiper and Talleres Industriales will serve the vessels sailing between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans via Panama Canal.

The deal has made Panama Canal the first operational location of HullWiper in the Americas.

Talleres Industriales managing director Lino Arosemena said: “Our company has been serving the area for half a century and now more than 1,200 vessels we attend to every year will have the opportunity to use this new service.

“HullWiper’s green credentials make it a good fit with other environmentally friendly technologies in which Talleres has invested in recent years, including sulphur cap solutions, ballast water system installation and pollution control division.”

HullWiper has developed a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) system that uses adjustable seawater jets under variable pressure to remove fouling, instead of using brushes or abrasives.

The ROV also reduces the risk of damage to anti-fouling coatings, eliminates the risk to human life, and allows cleaning during the day or night.

It is equipped with a filter to collect the removed residues, which are deposited into dedicated drums onshore for disposal. The filter also lowers the threat of cross-pollination of waters with alien species.

HullWiper was launched in Dubai in 2013 and is currently serving various ports in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Singapore, Spain, the Netherlands, Egypt, Australia, the UK, and others.
