Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has granted design approval for the ‘Panda 93P’ very large gas carrier (VLGC) design.

The design has been developed by Jiangnan Shipyard, a unit of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

Singapore-based gas shipowner Sinogas has ordered two 93,000cbm VLGCs, along with options for three additional ships.

These vessels are slated to be delivered in the first half of 2023 and are said to be ‘the world’s largest’ VLGCs powered by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when completed.

Compared to the previous generation of 84,000cbm VLGCs driven by low-sulfur fuel oil, the new vessels will cut down CO₂ emissions by around 32%.

BV stated that this will happen due to the ‘highly optimised design and economies of scale, as well as the use of LPG as fuel’.

The new design will build on Jiangnan’s ‘Panda’ Series VLGC design and will feature an optimised hull-form, enabling more cargo capacity without escalating fuel consumption significantly.

Furthermore, it will be equipped with two deck-mounted LPG fuel tanks, allowing LPG-powered operations when transporting non-LPG cargo.

The Jiangnan team utilised computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for hull line optimisation.

In addition, the company deployed smart shipbuilding techniques with the use of digital technology, 3D digital mock-ups, 3D model submission, and production planning, erection simulation and lifecycle management.

Over the last 20 years, Jiangnan Shipyard has concluded several projects in partnership with BV.

Recently, Hyundai Heavy Industries and Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering obtained approval in principle from BV for the design and development of an ammonia carrier with ammonia-powered propulsion.
