Port and terminal cargo handling solutions provider Kalmar has secured an order from port operator DP World to supply 15 rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs).

According to the agreement, Cargotec subsidiary Kalmar will supply the cranes for the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT) in Mumbai, India.

The contract also includes on-site maintenance support for a period of two years. The cranes are expected to be delivered during the fourth quarter of 2020.

The Kalmar classic RTGs to be delivered to the Indian port integrates diesel and electric technology to provide improved fuel savings.

The cranes’ operation is hassle-free since they only require maintenance after being used for 1,000 hours.

The RTGs to be supplied to Nhava Sheva will be fitted with a variable speed generator (VSG). The VSG will automatically optimise RPM (revolutions per minute), according to the required power demand. This offers a high fuel economy and cuts emissions.

Kalmar Automation Solutions Sales vice-president Eduardo Prat: “We are delighted to announce this order from DP World, a partner with whom we have a long-standing and highly successful relationship.

“Furthermore, this order is a reflection of the skill and dedication of our local service team in India, whose unparalleled knowledge of RTG technology will ensure that we can continue to provide NSICT with world-class service and support.”

Part of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), NSICT is India’s first public-private partnership project.

Last month, Kalmar won a contract to upgrade four ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at the EurogateTanger container terminal in Morocco.

Recently, Kalmar also agreed to provide prevention and corrective maintenance services at Operaciones Portuarias Canarias SA’s (OPCSA) Las Palmas container terminal in Spain.

In July, the company secured an order to deliver eight heavy-duty forklifts to C.RO Ports, which will be deployed at its three terminals across Europe.
