Malaysia-based maritime solutions and services provider MISC Berhad has received delivery of Seri Erlang, its second very large ethane carrier (VLEC), from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI).

MISC purchased Seri Erlang in July last year, which is the second of the six contracted VLECs.

The vessel has been constructed for long-term charter to Zhejiang Satellite Petrochemical (STL).

Along with Seri Everest, Seri Erlang will transport ethane from the US to China, supporting STL’s ethane cracker centre in China.

Eaglestar Shipmanagement Gas, a ship management unit of MISC, is currently managing the VLECs.

MISC group CEO and president Yee Yang Chien said: “We are pleased, indeed, to make a brilliant start at the very beginning of 2021 with the safe delivery of Seri Erlang.

“We look forward to the delivery of the remaining four VLECs as we progress into 2021. Commencing the year on strong tailwinds, we remain positive for favourable developments in the industry and more opportunities in Asia, which has now become a vital demand centre for the ethane market.”

Seri Erlang has a total cargo capacity of more than 98,000 cbm. It features a reliquefaction unit and a high-pressure ethane fuel supply system.

The new vessel has the ability to burn ethane as it is powered by a MAN B&W 7G60ME-C9.5-GIE Gas Injection Ethane engine and the latest Pump Vaporiser Unit (PVU).

For dual-cargo loading, Seri Erlang has been built with a cargo containment system.

Moreover, it has been supplied with liquefied natural gas (LNG)-ready notation by ABS, enabling LNG cargo upgrade in the future.

The remaining four ships will be delivered during the first half of this year.

The company said that after receiving all the VLECs, it will become the biggest transporter of ethane globally.
