Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) have launched the Active Funnel system to help container vessel operators to reduce sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions.

Active Funnel includes an optimally shaped exhaust gas scrubbing structure that lowers the release of sulphur dioxide (SO2) from the ship’s exhaust gas.

The solution is designed to reduce the sulphur content in the vessels’ exhaust gas from 3.5% to 0.1%, allowing the operators to comply with the newly introduced SOx emissions regulation that is expected to be effective on 1 January 2020.

It was developed combining MHPS’ comprehensive exhaust gas treatment technologies used to build desulfurisation systems for thermal power plants with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s marine engineering expertise.

According to MHPS, its land-based flue gas desulfurisation systems can treat the equivalent of seven to 20 times the emissions from a large-sized marine diesel engine.

Active Funnel is suitable for use in very large container ships with high exhaust gas emissions and limited installation space for SOx abatement systems.

It can be installed in narrow spaces between the container holds, without affecting the vessels’ container capacity.

Equipped with one module, the funnel can also be installed on existing ships within a short retrofitting period.

Active Funnel is applicable to both open-loop systems and hybrid systems.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding plans to expand the use of Active Funnel to very large crude carriers (VLCC) and very large ore carriers (VLOC).
