Japan-based Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS) have entered a collaboration framework agreement with China’s COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry (Dalian) (CHI Dalian) to jointly build and market rectangular sulfur-oxide (SOx) scrubbers.

As part of the agreement, the companies will be involved in all the processes of rectangular scrubbers developed by Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and MHPS.

The companies aim to provide a single-stop solution to the customers by focusing right from the design and manufacturing to on-board installation of the scrubbers.

As per the agreement, CHI Dalian will build, assemble and deliver the scrubbers and install them on ships. The partnership is expected to ramp up the sales activities of the scrubbers.

Mitsubishi Shipbuilding and MHPS’ SOx scrubbers incorporate a rectangular shape to consume less space after installations.

“The partnership is expected to ramp up the sales activities of the scrubbers.”

Developed to serve the marine industry, the scrubbers combine MHPS’ exhaust gas treatment technologies with Mitsubishi Shipbuilding’s expertise in marine engineering.

MHPS’ exhaust gas treatment technologies are formulated using the company’s exhaust gas desulfurisation systems for thermal power plants.

The desulfurisation system can be efficiently installed within the limited areas on-board a ship and can help ships to reduce the content of sulfur dioxide (SO2) in its exhaust gas to a level that meets the new emissions regulations, which are expected to be effective by 2020 across the globe.

The SOx scrubber is also designed to use seawater as its cleaning agent and incorporates an ‘open-loop’ system to spray seawater intake directly on the exhaust gas. The system can be installed on both new and retrofitted vessels.
