MSC Cruises is set to construct a new multi-cruise ship terminal at PortMiami in Florida, US, to expand its presence in North America and the Caribbean.

The development comes after MSC Cruises signed a memorandum of understanding with Miami-Dade County in July last year to build a new Cruise Terminal AAA.

The proposal secured approval from the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners.

As part of its latest plans, MSC Cruises will design, construct, operate and maintain a building that hosts AA and AAA cruise terminals designed by global architecture firm Arquitectonica in addition to two berths.

The two new PortMiami terminals can host two mega cruise ships simultaneously, enabling MSC Cruises to perform two turnaround operations at a time and handle up to 28,000 passenger movements per day.

MSC Cruises executive chairman Pierfrancesco Vago said: “With another 13 cruise vessels due to join our fleet in the next eight years, our ambition is to have our most innovative ship classes represented at PortMiami, bringing a wealth of choice to our North American as well as international guests.

“Our ambition is to have our most innovative ship classes represented at PortMiami.”

“In particular, the new terminal, which will be one of the most innovative the industry has seen, will ensure that we can provide our guests an enhanced end-to-end high-quality experience while both embarking and disembarking, thus adding to their ability to fully enjoy every moment of their vacation.”

MSC Cruises is set to start work on the new terminals early next year, with completion expected by late 2022. All the company’s PortMiami operations will be transferred to the new terminal.

With the new cruise facilities in place, MSC Cruises will bring a total of one million guests through PortMiami annually.

At present, the company operates MSC Seaside, MSC Armonia, MSC Divina, and MSC Meraviglia vessels out of PortMiami.
