The new 38,800dwt Great Intelligence smart ship has been launched in China.

Designed by Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI), the ship is an updated version of the Green Dolphin fuel-efficient bulk carrier concept.

The vessel represents the first pilot smart ship project in China. It meets Lloyd’s Register (LR) requirements for cyber-enabled ships (CES), including Cyber AL2 Safe, Cyber AL2 Maintain, and Cyber AL2 Perform.

It is equipped with a ship operation and maintenance system (SOMS) that uses advanced sensing technology to build its network.

The SOMS is also used to provide health management, energy efficiency management, and an intelligent integration platform to the vessel.

An intelligent navigation system has also been included in Great Intelligence to boost the vessel’s systems.

The ship was built by China State Shipbuilding’s (CSSC) subsidiary Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard (GWS). LR, System Engineering research Institute (SERI) and China Class Society (CCS) were also engaged in shipbuilding.

SDAR IInnovation Centre’s smart ship project team vice-director Li Xinsaid: “SDARI has been making effort to design ships that are safe, economic, and efficient. Great Intelligence is one of those.

“After the delivery, it will be an example what a smart ship is and make the shipping safer, more economic, and more efficient.”
