Norwegian classification society DNV GL has unveiled its new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fuelled carrier concept design known as LPGreen, which was developed in collaboration with Consolidated Marine Management (CMM), Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), and Wärtsilä Oil & Gas.
The concept has been designed as part of a joint industry project (JIP) that seeks to build a more energy efficient, environmentally friendly, and safer vessel for the transportation of LPG products.

The new design is said to have offered an overall improvement of 6%-9% in energy efficiency depending on the machinery configuration and fuel used when compared to a reference vessel from CMM’s fleet, which was built in 2016.
A redesigned tank has also been implemented that allows for a filling limit of 99%, representing a 1% increase in overall carrying capacity.
DNV GL principal specialist and LPGreen project manager George Dimopoulos said: “Perhaps most importantly, LPGreen has demonstrated the technical feasibility of a LPG fuelled propulsion concept, which depending on fuel prices and the development of a commercial and chartering framework could result in a cut of up to 30% in fuel expenses.”

By GlobalDataDNV GL has revealed the design of a new efficient liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, as part of a separate development.
The LNG carrier has been developed in partnership with ship building company DSME under a joint development project (JDP), and features direct-coupled, two-stroke dual-fuel (DF) main engines and DF auxiliary engines, which use LNG as the primary fuel.
It also features a combined gas turbine, electric and steam (COGES) propulsion system to facilitate optimised performance.
