Evergreen Group has placed an order with Japanese shipbuilder Imabari for ten 2,800 TEU class B-type vessels.

The latest deal comes after Evergreen signed an agreement with Taiwan-based CSBC for ten similar vessels last month.

Planned to be delivered in the beginning of the first half of 2018, all the ships will be received by the first half of 2019.

Evergreen plans to use the new vessels for its intra-Asia trade operations.

"The vessels will also be equipped with various environmental protection devices and advanced technology to safeguard sustainable development of the marine environment."

The 211m-long ships will have a design draft of 10m, and can load 13 rows of containers on deck.

Powered by an electronic-controlled fuel injection engine, the vessels will cruise at a speed up to 21.8k, and will have a wider hull, compared to other similar ships to navigate in the shallower ports and enhance cargo carrying capability.

The engine complies with the IMO Tier II standards for NOx emission, and the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) to reduce emissions by around 20%.

The vessels will also be equipped with various environmental protection devices and advanced technology to safeguard sustainable development of the marine environment, Evergreen said.

The company has created eco-friendly criteria with regard to operation of the vessels, to reduce their impact on port communities and eco-systems.

The deal for B-type vessels is the third for Imabari, as part of Evergreen Line’s fleet renewal programme.

Imabari’s ship owning arm Shoei Kisen Kaisha was earlier selected to charter five 14,000 TEU containerships and 11 18,000 TEU containerships.
