HiCASS

South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has developed new collision avoidance system for ships, named Hyundai intelligent collision avoidance support system (HiCASS).

The system will help ships detect potential vessels and other obstacles up to 50km and search for the optimum sea route.

HiCASS will also help identify hazards based on the type of vessel, weather conditions, waves and wind, according to the company.

HHI has equipped the system with a notification technology to signal collision risk levels and dangerous things on the sea.

When linked with other voyage systems, including automatic radar plotting aid, automatic identification system and electronic chart system, HiCASS can analyse locations of the obstacles in compliance with the international regulations for preventing collisions at sea.

“HHI has equipped the system with a notification technology to signal collision risk levels and dangerous things on the sea.”

HHi tested the performance of its anti-collision system recently on a 13,800 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containership and a 162,000m³ LNG carrier.

The shipbuilding firm said that it will commercialise the system from 2016 as it wants to test its stability on long-distance routes.

Headquartered in Ulsan, HHI is one of the largest shipbuilding companies in the world.

The company operates its businesses through seven divisions, shipbuilding, offshore and engineering, industrial plant and engineering, engine and machinery, electro and electric systems, construction equipment, and green energy.
