Japan’s Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has introduced a new technological development initiative, the ISHIN Next MOL smart ship project, to share its technological development policies with customers and stakeholders.

Built on the basis of the company’s Senpaku ISHIN project, announced in 2009, the newly launched project aims to gather various needs and seeds of technologies.

By matching the shared technological needs and seeds, MOL will develop two fields of technologies, which includes the development of improved technologies for safer vessel operation and reduction of environmental impact. As part of the new project, MOL will also adopt to the building of vessels with such technological features included.

"Senpaku ISHIN aims to help protect the environment by reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using innovative technology."

The company will then verify the practical effects of these technologies every year after the vessels are in-service.

MOL is also involved in developing technologies that adopt information and communication technologies (ICT).

The company noted that with its next-generation vessels concept, Senpaku ISHIN aims to help protect the environment by reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using innovative technology.

As part of the project, MOL has already developed the ISHIN-III waste heat energy recovery system to assist ship propulsion.

Reducing CO2 by 30%, the system uses several methods of emission reduction, even when a vessel is operating at a low speed, and during the ship’s normal operation periods.
