German shipbuilder MV Werften has begun the construction of a new €80m hall complex at its yard in Rostock, Germany.

The new shipbuilding facility will be named hall complex 11 and feature a length of 385m, a width of 99m and a height of roughly 24m.

It is to be equipped with a highly productive semi-automatic panel line and welding panels of up to 25m by 16m.

A new section-building line and section-outfitting line will also be installed in the hall, which is expected to be commissioned next year.

Once operational, the Rostock site will be able to produce 80 large sections for each of the 342m-long Global Class vessels.

MV Werften chief operating officer Holger Tepper said: “With these new facilities we will significantly increase the capacity of our steel prefabrication, and thus increase our productivity too.

“Around 200 employees will be working in the new hall complex.”

MV Werften noted that it aims to employ up to 1,000 personnel at the new site.

"With these new facilities we will significantly increase the capacity of our steel prefabrication, and thus increase our productivity too."

The company is set to invest more than €100m in the Rostock yard as part of its comprehensive development programme, including the latest investment in hall 11.

MV Werften previously signed three contracts outlining a total expenditure of roughly €75m in the Rostock yard in September.

The contracts included a deal with welding and production automation specialist Pemamek for the purchase of a new thin-plate laser panel line.

The other two agreements were signed with Inros Lackner for the construction of a new hall and Warnow Design for the provision of design services respectively.
