ABB has been selected to supply a complete power, propulsion and automation package for five new cruise vessels, to be owned by Genting Hong Kong brands, Crystal Cruises and Star Cruises.

Currently being built at MV Werften’s shipyard in Germany, all the five vessels will include a complete ABB propulsion system, electric power plant, automation and marine software system.

Three of the under-construction Endeavor class mega-yachts of Crystal Cruises will feature a Polar Class 6 and will be powered by ABB’s two Azipod D units, enabling the ships to navigate the Arctic region.

"For two decades, Azipod propulsion has enabled cruise operators to push both technological and geographical boundaries."

With a 204,000t capacity, the two new Global class vessels of Star Cruises will be equipped with three Azipod XO thrusters.

Once completed, the vessels will serve the Asian cruise market.

All the five vessels, which are scheduled to be delivered from 2019, will feature ABB´s automation with Intelligent Maneuvering Interface and Octopus marine software.

ABB marine and ports business managing director Juha Koskela said: “For two decades, Azipod propulsion has enabled cruise operators to push both technological and geographical boundaries.

“This exciting new generation of Genting vessels has been built in that same spirit and our power and Azipod propulsion systems together with automation and marine software will support the outstanding performance of the vessels.”

In May last year, ABB was selected to power a Chinese polar science research icebreaker with its Azipod propulsion system.

Under the deal, ABB would provide two Azipod VI units, with a combined power of 15MW, to the ship.
